| Las Vegas is a city in the central part of the state of Nevada. With a population of 570,000 it is the largest city in Nevada and the twenty-eighth largest city in the United States. The MSA area has nearly two million residents. Although settled since the early 1800s the city of Las Vegas was formed in 1911. The climate is warm with average winter low temperatures of 37 and summer highs in the low 100s. Precipitation averages less than half an inch per month of rain. Las Vegas has more of the world's largest hotels than any other city. The area is home to many business in the entertainment, conventions/travel and gaming industries. Las Vegas is one of the largest cities in the country without major league sports teams. Area educational institutions include University of Nevada at Las Vegas, University of Phoenix, DeVry University, National University, University of Nevada Medical School, and ITT Technical Institute.
